Muted Milan
vs Punchy Paris

Looking through a selection of designers’ collections across a season, you’ll notice similar colours cropping up time and time again. This isn’t a coincidence, it’s the result of a whole industry built up of forecasters, fabric suppliers and colour experts, like Pantone, who predetermine a season’s colours up to two years in advance.

Despite designer’s choices being steered by the chosen palettes, it’s still fascinating to see which colours then make it through into the collections. Our charts explore those choices, with the latest sets of data in from Milan and Paris.

So what made the cut? Interestingly, both Milan and Paris backed an obscure shade of chartreuse, as shown by Andrew GN in Paris and Albino in Milan. Another prominent shade adopted by both cities was the strong pillar box red - a classic shade, which was picked up on by Valentino and Trussardi. Grey was also given the nod of approval by the two cities, featured in Milan by Byblos and Rick Owens in Paris, both of whom showed futuristic-themed collections.

Milan’s difference lay in muted hues, with dusky lavenders and blues not seen in Paris. These were best illustrated by the glamorous sportswear at Sportmax. Milan also chose shades from the aquatic green side of the spectrum; both Versace and Francesco Scognamiglio included the sea-like shade in their pick. A deeper green, not seen in Paris, London or New York made an appearance in Milan too, most notably in the fitted pencil dresses at Jil Sander.

Paris stamped its own personality on the palette with strong blues, ranging from a deep electric at Jean Paul Gaultier, to the rich navies in the fine knit dresses at Sacai. Paris also showed a real penchant for the neutrals in the colour wheel. Taupes, biscuit, tan and beige had a much stronger presence here than in Milan.

So whilst Milan opted for a more varied palette, with some unusual shades of the season’s key colour trends, Paris was actually the brighter of the two cities. Paris however chose to tone this brightness down with neutrals, whilst Milan’s mellow moment was taken from duskier tones.
