Every season, designers play with colours from the same palette. That's not a coincidence, it's the work of forecasters, fabric suppliers and vendors like Pantone. So even though the full palette is predetermined — the choices designers then make are interesting. And when you consider the choices made across all of London and New York it shows how a whole region has interpreted that palette.
Mid-blues and navy were favoured by designers in New York, as reflected in the collections of BCBG Max Azira, Porter Grey and Richard Chai. Known to be chic and sleek, it’s no surprise that greys were also a much visited shade. Rachel Comey’s collection excelled in muted colour blocking; smart grey shift dresses sat alongside the mid blues, making a fresh statement.
A clear overlap between the New York and London shows can be seen in the bold oranges and tomato red tones. Whilst New York veered towards the mellow end of the spectrum, with melon and vermillion tones, London didn’t shy away from louder takes; Unconditional and Amanda Wakeley both taking the plunge.
London’s palette also included a penchant for pastels — with pales in pink, lemon, mint and lilac cropping up at PPQ, Mulberry and House of Holland. The look is young, fresh and perfectly suited to the spring/summer season. Gold was also popular, with designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Ashley Isham and Topshop Unique presenting head-to-toe looks.
Overall, London's palette was brighter and lighter than New York's. London designers are known for being more experimental and daring — their more varied palette reflects this. New York, with its sharper work wear and more polished looks veer towards a more grown up and focused palette.
